Maila
Privacy Policy
The short version: I don't collect any data. Maila has no servers of its own, no accounts, no analytics, no crash reporting and no ads. Your journals live on your iPhone and in your own iCloud.
Who this covers
This policy covers the Maila app for iPhone, made by Xander Harry Angulo ("I", "me"). It explains what happens to what you write.
What I collect
Nothing. Maila doesn't send any information to me or to anyone working for me, except a report you choose to email (see below). I can't see your journals, your photos, your voice notes, your locations or who you share with.
Where your journals are stored
- On your iPhone. Everything you write is saved on your device.
- In your iCloud. Maila uses Apple's iCloud (CloudKit) to sync your journals between your devices. Private journals are stored in your own iCloud account and are governed by Apple's privacy policy.
- With people you invite. When you share a journal, the people you invite can read and add to that journal. That journal is stored in the owner's iCloud and shared through iCloud. Your other journals are not shared. Your default journal is always private and can't be shared.
- Apple services. Place search and map snapshots use Apple Maps. Settings such as your block list and theme sync through iCloud key-value storage. Maila uses no other network services.
Permissions Maila asks for
- Photos and camera: only to add the photos you choose to an entry.
- Microphone: only to record voice notes you start.
- Location: only to tag an entry with a place when you ask it to.
- Face ID / Touch ID: to lock the app, falling back to your iPhone passcode. This is handled by iOS. Maila never sees your face or fingerprint data and has no passcode of its own.
- Speech recognition: dictation is processed on your iPhone.
You can change any of these in iOS Settings at any time.
Muse
Muse suggests prompts and look-backs from your entries. It uses Apple's on-device Foundation Models, so your writing is processed on your iPhone and isn't sent anywhere. Private Cloud Compute is never used. Muse needs an Apple Intelligence–capable iPhone with Apple Intelligence turned on; otherwise Maila shows built-in writing ideas. You can turn Muse off.
Reporting and blocking in shared journals
If someone in a shared journal posts something you don't want to see, you can block them, report them or an entry, or leave the journal.
- Block: hides that person's entries everywhere and stops them sharing with you again. They aren't told. You can unblock in Settings › Blocked People.
- Report: you pick a reason and can add a note. Maila then opens a pre-filled email in Mail, addressed to the developer, which you send yourself. It contains the reason, the report type, the reported person's name (for person reports), your note, a random report ID and the app version. The text of an entry is included only if you turn that on, and it is off by default. Photos and attachments are never included.
- Maila has no backend and sends nothing on its own. Nothing is sent unless you send the email.
- Remove & Block: a journal's owner can remove someone from a shared journal. Removing always blocks, and the person isn't told.
Children
Maila doesn't collect data from anyone, including children.
Deleting your data
- Delete an entry or a journal in the app.
- Leave a shared journal from its settings. You can choose to keep your entries or delete the entries you wrote in it.
- To remove everything Maila stored in iCloud, go to Settings › your name › iCloud › Manage Account Storage › Maila, and delete the data.
- Deleting the app removes the copy on your iPhone.
Changes
If this policy changes, I'll update this page and the date at the top. If a change affects what happens to your data, I'll also say so in the app's release notes.
