Maila

Something not working, or a question the app doesn't answer? Email me and I'll get back to you, usually within two days.
Does the person I share with need an iPhone?
Yes. Everyone in a shared journal needs an iPhone with Maila installed and signed in to iCloud.
How do I share a journal?
Create a new journal, open its settings, and choose Manage Sharing. Invite people through Apple's iCloud sharing, from Messages, Mail or anywhere you share. When they accept on their iPhone, the journal shows up under Together. Your default journal is always private and can't be shared.
How do I stop sharing or leave a journal?
Open the journal's settings. If you own it, Manage Sharing lets you remove a person (removing someone always blocks them, and they aren't told) or stop sharing from Apple's iCloud sharing sheet. If someone else owns it, tap Leave Journal, then choose Leave and Keep My Entries or Leave and Delete My Entries.
How do I report or block someone in a shared journal?
Open the entry, tap the more button, and choose Report or Block. A report can be about a person or an entry: pick a reason and add an optional note. The entry's text is included only if you turn that on, and it is off by default. Photos and attachments are never included. Maila opens a pre-filled email in Mail addressed to the developer, and you choose whether to send it; the app sends nothing on its own. Blocking hides that person's entries everywhere and stops them sharing with you again. They aren't told. To unblock, go to Settings › Blocked People.
What do I need to run Maila?
An iPhone running iOS 27 or later, signed in to iCloud.
What happens when I get a new phone?
Sign in to the same iCloud account and install Maila. Your journals sync back down from iCloud. Make sure iCloud is turned on for Maila in Settings › your name › iCloud.
My entries aren't syncing.
Check that you're signed in to iCloud, that iCloud Drive is on, and that you have iCloud storage left. Sync can take a minute on a slow connection.
Face ID isn't unlocking Maila.
Make sure Face ID is allowed for Maila in Settings › Face ID & Passcode › Other Apps. If Face ID or Touch ID fails, you can unlock with your iPhone passcode. Maila has no separate passcode, so your iPhone needs a device passcode set for the lock to work.
Why can't I use Muse?
Muse uses Apple's on-device Foundation Models, which need an Apple Intelligence–capable iPhone with Apple Intelligence turned on in Settings. Otherwise Maila shows built-in writing ideas. You can also turn Muse off in Maila's settings.
